Why pay for Midjourney? 3 Free AI Art tools for 2026

Midjourney is great, but the subscription adds up. Alex tests Flux.1 and Leonardo to see if you can finally cancel that $30/month bill.

Midjourney is great, but my wallet is tired

Look, I love Midjourney’s “v6” as much as the next guy. But in 2026, paying $30 a month just to generate some cool Discord images feels… unnecessary. Especially with Flux.1 and the new Leonardo.ai updates out there for free.

I ran a few tests today. Flux.1 handles text better than Midjourney ever did. Leonardo? Their new “Canvas” mode is basically Photoshop for people who can’t use Photoshop. You get nearly the same quality without the recurring credit card hit.

Is it perfect? Not yet. Midjourney still has that “artistic soul” sometimes. But for 90% of blog work or social media? The free tools are catching up fast.

Alex’s Take
Subscription fatigue is real. If you aren’t a professional concept artist, save your $360 a year. Flux is the new king of the “everyday AI” world. Just me?
